Volleyball Stuns Liberty 3-0

11.14.2014 | Women's Volleyball

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team played its best game of the season Friday afternoon as the Bulldogs stunned Liberty, 3-0 in Big South Conference action at the Vines Center. Asheville won the match, 25-19, 25-19, 25-20.

The Bulldogs (8-21, 4-8 BSC) stayed alive in their quest to get the eighth spot for next week's Big South Conference Tournament. Asheville pulled into a tie with Campbell for eighth place in the league standings, pending the Lady Camels game at Coastal Carolina tonight. If the teams finish in a tie, the Bulldogs would win the tie-breaker with their win over Campbell two weeks ago.

Asheville was led by Christine Lakatos with 12 kills. The junior had 10 kills over the final two sets. Shelby Erickson added nine kills and six service aces. Freshman Katie Creger had five blocks on the day. Bryn Pfeiffer contributed a game-high 17 digs. Setter Katie Davis had 27 assists and five kills.

“This is a great win for us against a very good Liberty team,” stated Bulldog coach Frederico Santos. “It's been a tough year but our team has been getting better and it was nice to see them rewarded today. We're going to keep battling and see what we can do tomorrow at Radford.”

Asheville led from start to finish in the first two sets. Erickson had four kills in the first set as the Bulldogs won the opening set 25-19. Lakatos had five kills in the second set, while Erickson had three service aces as the Bulldogs took a 2-0 lead into intermission.

The third set was tied at 16-16 before the Blue & White went on a 4-0 run to grab a 20-16 lead. Liberty rallied to close to 20-18 but another Lakatos kill put the Bulldogs back in front 21-18. The Bulldogs closed the match out with four of the next six points to enjoy their first win at the Vines Center since the 2009 season.

Asheville finishes up the regular season at defending Big South Champion Radford Thursday at 4 p.m.
