Volleyball Falls in 5 Sets to Presbyterian

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Presbyterian College placed three players in double figures in kills as the Blue Hose held off UNC Asheville in five sets Friday night at Justice Center. PC won the match, 25-18, 23-25, 25-20, 12-25, 15-10.
The Bulldogs (6-21, 2-9 BSC) received a great performance from Christine Lakatos with a season-high 18 kills and 14 digs. Catherine Fischer added 12 kills, five service aces and seven digs. Freshman Katie Creger had 10 blocks as Asheville had a season-high 16 blocks for the match. Bryn Pfeiffer had a team-high 19 digs.
The Blue Hose (11-14, 6-6 BSC) was led by Rachel Hall's team-high 17 kills. Kerry Berryman added 13 kills and six blocks. Ashton Stewart finished with 11 kills. Mary Trimpe had a game-high 26 digs.
Asheville trailed 2-1 but used great serving by Fischer and tremendous blocking to roar to a 25-12 win to even the match at 2-2. Fischer had three service aces in the set.
In the fifth set, PC used a 5-2 run to seize control of the match at 10-7. The visitors got kills from three different players as Asheville had two service errors to aid the run.
Madison Vaughn's kill allowed the home team to get back to 11-9. But the Blue Hose got blocks on two of the next three points to fuel a 3-0 and get PC to match point at 14-9. Hall's kill ended the match and gave the visitors their first win at Justice Center since 2008.
PC opened the match with seven points and led 7-0. They held off several Bulldog runs to win the set 25-18. Asheville used a late run in the second set, thanks to five kills from Lakatos, to win the set 25-22 and send the match into intermission tied at 1-1.
The Blue Hose hit .250 in the third set with 12 kills and cruised to a 25-20 win.
UNC Asheville is back in action Saturday afternoon against Winthrop at Justice Center starting at 1 p.m.
