ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Senior Paul Egle scored in the 70th minute as UNC Asheville edged Longwood, 1-0 in Big South Conference men's soccer action Sunday afternoon at Greenwood Field.
Egle's goal gave the Bulldogs (3-8-3, 1-4-2) their second straight win and three important points in the race to get into the Big South Conference Tournament. The win moved Asheville into the eight spot with five points.
Senior goalkeeper Dan Jackson made that goal stand up as he made six saves on the day to earn his first shutout of the year.
The Lancers held a slight edge in shots at 15-12, while the Blue & White had a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks.
The winning goal came off a direct kick. Longwood was called for foul. Sophomore Zach Joens sent a direct toward the Longwood goal. Egle moved up and was able to re-direct the ball off his right leg into left corner of the net for the game's only goal at 70:20. It was the senior's third goal of the season.
The Lancers pressed in the final 20 minutes for the equalizer and had five shots but two were stopped by Jackson.
UNC Asheville finishes the regular season on the road as the Bulldogs travel to Presbyterian College Wednesday night at 6 p.m. and then finishes at Campbell next Saturday (Nov. 8) at 6 p.m.
