ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women's soccer team will play its biggest game of the season on Tuesday afternoon when the Bulldogs finish the regular season against Gardner-Webb at Greenwood Field starting at 5 p.m.
Tuesday's action will be video-streamed and can be seen for free on the Big South Digital Network. Fans can access the broadcast at uncabulldogs.com under the multimedia tag.
Asheville (9-8-1, 3-5-1) needs a victory to assure of getting into the Big South Conference championship tournament that starts this weekend. The Bulldogs are currently tied for eighth in the 11-team with Winthrop. The top eight teams go to the tournament and Asheville would be sitting it out because the Bulldogs fell to Winthrop earlier this year.
Asheville's nine wins is the most for the program since the 2006 season. The Bulldogs were a preseason pick to finish in 10th place this year but have posted some impressive league wins over Campbell, Radford and Coastal Carolina. Michelle Demko's team needs one more win to get into the tournament. The Bulldogs could possibly get in with a tie but would need help.
"Tuesday's game comes down to an important moment for our program. A win guarantees us a spot in the conference tournament. This has been a team goal this season, to return to the tournament, and we are in a great position to control our own destiny,” stated Demko. “We will need to compete for 90 minutes and dictate the tempo from the opening whistle. This moment is what we have been working for since early August. I believe in this group, they are ready to put it on the line for each other and this program. This should be fun and is what college athletics is about."
Prior to the match, the school will honor its four seniors playing their final home game. They are Amanda Dailor, Megan Foster, Heather Muller and Kaitlyn Eckert.
The Bulldogs will have their hands full with a talented Gardner-Webb squad. The Runnin' Bulldogs (8-8-2, 4-3-2 BSC) have won three straight and are looking for a top-four finish to host a tournament match. GWU edged Charleston Southern on Saturday, 2-1.
Amanda Dailor and Caroline Houser lead Asheville in scoring with 16 points. Dailor has eight assists on the year along with four goals. Houser tops the club in goals scored with six. Heather Muller has been the Bulldogs starting goalkeeper all year and has posted four shutouts, three in league play.
