Gardner-Webb Holds off Bulldogs in Five Sets

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Gardner-Webb scored the final two points of the match as the Runnin' Bulldogs held off UNC Asheville, 3-2 in Big South Conference volleyball action Friday night at Justice Center.
The Running Bulldogs (10-13, 3-3 BSC) won the first two sets, 25-21, 25-23 before Asheville rallied to win the next two sets, 25-21, 25-14.
In the fifth set, GWU built an 8-3 only to see the Bulldogs rally to take an 11-10 lead. The visitors went on a 3-0 to take a 13-11 lead only to see the home team score the next two points to tie the match at 13-13.
Asheville (4-17, 1-5 BSC) was called for a net error to put Gardner-Webb at match point at 14-13. Tyler Cockrell then blocked a Bulldog attempt and earned a block solo to give the Runnin' Bulldogs the hard-fought win.
Tyler Cockrell led GWU with a game-high 19 kills. Tyra Montour finished with 14 kills. Brianna Starr recorded 12 kills and 17 digs. Anna Pashkova recorded a team-high 26 digs, including some crucial digs in the fifth set.
The Bulldogs were led by Shelby Erickson and Christine Lakatos with 14 kills each. Madison Vaughn had a career-best 11 kills. Lakatos had a season-high 25 digs, while Bryn Pfeiffer picked up 19 digs.
“We made a nice comeback, but just didn't play well enough to get the win,” stated Asheville coach Frederico Santos. “We're still battling but just have to be a little more consistent to win a match like tonight.”
UNC Asheville is on the road Saturday afternoon when the Bulldogs travel to South Carolina State for a match starting at 3:30 p.m.
