Spano Leads Women's Soccer Past S.C. State, 5-1

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Bethany Spano scored her first two career goals and added an assist at UNC Asheville downed visiting South Carolina State 5-1 in a non-conference women's soccer battle at Greenwood Field Monday evening.
The Bulldogs (8-6-1) won their second straight match as Paige Trent and Caroline Houser each had a goal and two assists. Amanda Dailor added two assists for the Blue & White.
S.C. State (1-11-0) picked up a goal from Dominique Brown in the 33rd minute that cut the Bulldog lead to 2-1. Brown led SCSU with five shots in the game.
Trent picked up her fifth goal of the year to get the Bulldogs on the board at 15:41 when she scored off a pass from Caroline Houser for a 1-0 lead.
Spano scored her first goal at 24:32. Off a free kick from Dailor, Spano tapped the ball into the back of the net for a 2-0.
Asheville just missed scoring a third goal thanks to the play of goalkeeper Haley Austin. She stopped nine Bulldog shots in the opening half.
Brown stunned the home team when connected on a blast for 20 yards out on a pass from Brittany Rodriguez to narrow the Asheville margin to 2-1.
But Spano scored late in the first on a double-assist from Trent and Kennedy Garrett to increase the Bulldog lead to 3-1 at 42:19.
Caroline Houser scored on a header off a perfect pass from Dailor at 53:23 to pad the margin to 4-1. Freshman Courtney Nabor completed the scoring at 63:34 on a goal from Spano and Houser. It was Nabor's first career goal.
UNC Asheville travels to High Point Wednesday for a key Big South battle starting at 7 p.m. Asheville returns home to host Coastal Carolina Saturday at 2 p.m.
