ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Katie Tuorto scored her first career in the 10th minute and that was enough as UNC Asheville held off Radford, 1-0 in Big South Conference women's soccer action Saturday afternoon at Greenwood Field.

Bulldog goalkeeper Heather Muller made eight saves, five in the second half to record her third shutout of the season and give Asheville its seventh win of the season. The Bulldogs improved to 7-6-1 overall and 2-3-1 in league play. Asheville's seven wins is the most for the Blue & White since the 2006 season.

The Highlanders dropped to a 6-6-1 overall and 3-2-1 in league action. It was RU's first loss to the Bulldogs since the 2006 season. Radford had been 8-0-1 against Asheville coming into Saturday's action.

The home team scored the only goal it would need at 10:03. Radford was called for a foul, and Asheville was awarded a free kick 30 yards out. Senior midfielder Amanda Dailor sent a perfect ball into the box. Tuorto headed the ball into the back of the net for a 1-0 Bulldog lead.

Asheville's defense played well on the day, limiting the high-scoring Highlanders to just 13 shots.

Muller made two big saves late in the match to keep the Bulldogs in front. A shot from Jasmine Simpson from six yards out was knocked away by Muller with 20 minutes left. Jordan Lundin had a blast from 10 yards out that appeared to be going into the top part of the goal until Muller got a hand on it and knocked it away.

RU starting goalkeeper Sydney Chervenic played the first 34 minutes before being injured and missing the rest of the contest. Back-up goalkeeper Katie McCormick made five saves in her 56 minutes of action.

The Highlanders held a slight 13-11 edge in shots and 6 to 4 advantage in corner kicks.

UNC Asheville plays a make-up game against South Carolina State at home on Monday afternoon at 5 p.m.
