JUPITER, Fla. - Former UNC Asheville baseball player Justin Schumer's season is not quite over.

The right-handed pitcher enjoyed a fine minor league season for the San Jose Giants this past year. He was a starting pitcher for the Giants this season. Schumer went 7-4 with a 4.87 ERA. The former Bulldog struck out 88 hitters in 140.1 innings pitching. He walked just 36. Schumer helped lead San Jose to a first-half title and trip to the playoffs.

Schumer will now pitch for Israel in the qualifying round of the World Baseball Classic that will be held Sept. 19-23 at Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter, Fla. Israel is one of our four teams competing for a spot in next March's World Baseball Classic. Also competing are France, South Africa and Spain. This week's tournament is a double-elimination affair where the winner will play next March.
