CLINTON, S.C. - A three-run double from Nate Chong in the bottom of the eighth inning broke a 2-2 tie and lifted the Presbyterian College baseball team to a win over visiting UNC Asheville on Sunday, 6-2.
The result clinched the series for PC as the Blue Hose improve to 12-18 on the year and 2-7 in Big South Conference play. UNC Asheville falls to 13-16 overall and 4-5 in league action.
Chong went 2-for-5 on the day with two doubles and led all players with three RBI. Brandon Paul smacked a two-run home run to left field in the fourth inning as well.
Buck Mosteller earned a win in relief, his first of the season. The redshirt senior threw one and one-third innings of relief, giving up one hit in a scoreless appearance. Starting lefthander Beau Dees provided a stellar effort, giving up two runs-one-earned-and five hits in six and two-thirds innings.
Hunter Bryant led Asheville with a 2-for-4, two-RBI effort. Brian Connolly received the loss in relief.
Asheville stranded two runners in the second before cashing in the third. An error put Andrew Kirkland on and a walk put two aboard for Hunter Bryant, who hit a two-run single to give the Bulldogs a lead, 2-0.
PC struck in the next inning as Kenny Bryant led off with a single and Paul pulled his second home run of the season over the left field fence to even the score at 2-2.
PC filled the bags with one out in the eighth inning, and Asheville sent Evan Joura to the mound to face Chong at the plate. Chong took three pitches before ripping a double down the left field line and the redshirt sophomore advanced to third on a throw home.
Billy Motroni then lifted a fly ball to right field that fell deep enough to score Chong on the tag and PC led by its eventual final margin, 6-2.
Asheville is in action again this Tuesday when the Bulldogs play at Furman Tuesday night at 6 p.m.
UNC Asheville finally returns home to Greenwood Field next weekend when the Bulldogs host Charleston Southern in Big South Conference play. The teams play a single game on Friday (April 6) at 3 p.m., followed by a double-header Saturday at 1 p.m.
