CLINTON, S.C. - Five early runs and a sterling outing from Bud Jeter (Columbia, S.C.) helped the Presbyterian College baseball team earn its first Big South Conference win of the season with a 5-0 blanking of UNC Asheville on Friday at the PC Baseball Complex.

PC improves to 11-17 overall and 1-6 in Big South play. Asheville falls to 12-15 and 3-4 in league action.

The sophomore Jeter turned in a career day, holding the Bulldogs scoreless while striking out a career-high six batters and scattering eight hits over seven innings.

The Blue Hose also received quality work from their bullpen, as Tim Corbin (Murrells Inlet, S.C.) and Kelly Wright (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) each threw one inning of shutout ball.

PC scored three runs in the first and one each in the fourth and fifth innings.

Jay Lizanich (Greer, S.C.), Brandon Paul (Augusta, Ga.) and Robby Swab (Kernersville, S.C.) tallied two hits and one RBI apiece for the Blue Hose.

Thomas Bess, Eli Miller and Hunter Bryant also posted two hits each.

The first inning saw the home side score all the runs it would need. Gabe Grammer (Irmo, S.C.) and Billy Motroni (Goose Creek, S.C.) began the game by picking up singles, setting up a Brad Zebedis (Rock Hill, S.C.) sacrifice bunt to move the runners over. A Kenny Bryant (Goose Creek, S.C.) groundout scored Grammer but pushed the inning one out away from ending.

PC kept the rally going thanks to a Brandon Paul RBI single on his first pitch. The play scored Motroni and gave PC a 2-0 advantage. A Swab single and Tony Micklon (Sumter, S.C.) hit-by-pitch loaded the bases for Lizanich, who legged out an RBI bunt single that plated Paul. A strikeout ended the inning, but not before PC led by three.

Jeter and the Blue Hose defense held the Bulldogs at bay while the PC nine struck again in the fourth. A Lizanich leadoff double turned into a run by way of an Andrew Williams (Augusta, Ga.) sacrifice bunt and Grammer sacrifice fly.

The Blue Hose tacked on one final run in the fifth. Zebedis smacked a leadoff single to third and PC put together two more singles to score the run. Swab brought the sophomore home, singling through the right side for his seventh RBI in his last four games.

With five runs, PC's pitching and field play sustained the squad the rest of the way.

Micklon made several highlight-reel plays on defense, beginning with a leaping catch at the warning track to rob Billy Creighton of an extra-base hit in the top of the fourth.

In the top of the sixth, Micklon helped gun down Thomas Bess at home, thanks to a Motroni relay at shortstop. The play ended the inning and kept Asheville off of the scoreboard.

The two teams meet at the PC Baseball Complex on Saturday at 2 p.m. for the second game of the series.
