WILMINGTON, N.C. - The UNC Asheville baseball team ran into some tough pitching on Friday on the first day of the Hughes Brother Challenge Tournament. The Bulldogs lost to N.C. State 10-1 in the first game of the tournament and then dropped an 8-1 decision to host UNC Wilmington in the nightcap.
Asheville (6-5) trailed 3-0 to the Wolfpack early in the first game before N.C. State broke the game open with five runs in the fifth inning.
Two Wolfpack hurlers limited the Bulldogs to just seven hits in the game. Jordan Lurie, Billy Creighton and Todd Joyner had two hits each. Lurie scored Asheville's only run of the game as he led off with a double and then scored on a Creighton groundout.
Dean Roland (2-1) suffered the loss for the Bulldogs.
In the second game, Ryan Dull (2-1) kept the Seahawks off the scoreboard until the fourth inning. He pitched seven innings, scattering seven hits, allowing four runs but only two were earned.
Asheville's bats were pretty quiet in the second game as it only generated four hits against the Seahawks (3-6).
The Dogs trailed 3-0 before getting a run in the eighth. Cody Buch drove in Eli Miller with a bases-loaded walk to cut the lead to 3-1.
UNC Wilmington put the game away in the bottom of the frame with five runs.
Asheville continues play in the tournament on Saturday as the Bulldogs will face N.C. State at Noon.
