GREENSBORO, N.C. - The UNC Asheville baseball team is back on the road this afternoon when the Bulldogs travel to Southern Conference foe UNC Greensboro at 4 p.m.
Asheville (3-0) started the season off in grand fashion last weekend with a three-game sweep of North Carolina Central on the road. The Bulldogs outscored the Eagles, 32-8 over the three-game series.
Junior Billy Creighton made his Asheville debut a memorable one by hitting .600 (6-10) with three home runs, nine RBI, one double, nine runs scored and five walks. In game one, he went 1-2 with four walks and two RBI, in addition to three runs scored. In game two, he was 2-3 with a homer, two RBI and crossed the plate three more times. Creighton then went 3-5 with two home runs, five RBI and three runs scored in the series finale. For the week, he posted a .733 on-base percentage and slugged 1.600.
The Bulldogs also got strong starting pitching from Ryan Dull, Dean Roland and Drew Spear in the series.
"We played pretty well all things considered last weekend," commented Asheville coach Tom Smith. "It was nice to play a lot of different guys. Our freshmen got their feet wet and it was good to enjoy some success.
"UNC Greensboro will be a bigger challenge," added Smith. "This is a well-coached team that is going to be among the top teams in the Southern Conference."
The Bulldogs play their home opener this weekend at Greenwood Field. Asheville hosts Saint Peters on Saturday at 2 p.m., followed by a double-header Sunday at 1 p.m.
