Lady Camels Upend Asheville, 82-62

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - The UNC Asheville women's basketball dropped its second Big South Conference game in a row on Monday evening, falling to conference newcomer Campbell 82-62, as the Camels connected on 13 three-pointers while shooting a blistering 51 percent from the floor.

Asheville converted only one three-point attempt on the night, going 25-68 overall on field goals. Freshman phenom Shonese Jones led the Bulldogs once again in scoring, posting 24 in the game. Fellow Freshman Leah Wormack scored 10 for the Blue & White, finishing one rebound away from her first double-double.

The Bulldogs drop to 4-9 on the year overall and 0-2 in the Big South, while Campbell improves to 9-4 and remains undefeated in conference play at 2-0.

The Camels got a team-high 20 points from Kate Cloxton, who connected on 5-of-8 treys. Tonisha Baker and Jessica Moore each scored 12 for the Camels, with Baker pulling down a team-high seven rebounds.

In the first half Leah Wormack put the Bulldogs up 2-0 but after that it would be all Camels, who went on a 29-9 run over the next 10 minutes to take a 29-11 lead with 9:13 remaining. After that the two teams would trade buckets back and forth, with Campbell taking a 43-23 lead into the break.

In the second half Asheville would pick up the pace offensively, going point-for-point with the Camels, but the Bulldogs could not dig themselves out of the early deficit. Each team scored 39 in the final frame with the Camels picking up the 20-point victory.

Asheville will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 7, when the Bulldogs return home to host Big South foe Coastal Carolina at Kimmel Arena. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. as the game is part of a doubleheader with the UNC Asheville men's team. Campbell will play at Radford next Saturday, with game time set for 3 p.m.
