Women's Soccer Opens League Play at VMI on Thursday

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville women's soccer team opens Big South Conference this week with a pair of road games in the state of Virginia. The Bulldogs travel to VMI on Thursday and will battle the Keydets at 4 p.m. On Saturday, Asheville heads to Radford to face the Highlanders at 7 p.m. Both matches will be video-streamed and can be seen for a small fee at www.uncabulldogs.com.

Asheville (1-8-0) has shown improvement throughout the season but fell in its last outing as the Bulldogs lost at ETSU, 3-0 Sunday afternoon.  Michelle Demko's team will face two tough opponents on the road. VMI is 3-4-1 on the year and defeated Asheville in its last three meetings. Radford has a 5-3-0 record as the Lady Highlanders have wins in three of their last four matches.

"We continue to improve and have made a lot of progress since the start of the season," explained Demko. "We need to step our play up with conference play beginning. We're going to face two tough opponents on the road."

Sophomore Amanda Knapp leads Asheville in scoring this season with three goals, three assists and nine points. Senior midfielder Leilani Halkiotis has three goals for the Bulldogs.

Asheville lost a tough one to VMI last season at Greenwood Field, 3-2. The Bulldogs lost to Radford at home, 2-0. The Lady Highlanders have won the last five meetings between the teams with four of those matches being decided by just one goal.

BULLDOG NOTES

Leilani Halkiotis has nine career goals and 25 career points.

Freshman goalkeeper Heather Muller has played in every minute of every match this season.

In Asheville's 5-1 victory over South Carolina State, the five goals was the most scored by a Bulldog team since 2007 when Asheville won, 5-0 at VMI.

The Bulldogs have taken at least 13 shots in the last four matches. Asheville has averaged 12.78 shots in its nine matches this season.

Asheville is home again on Tuesday, Oct. 4 vs. Presbyterian College at Greenwood Field starting at 3 p.m.
