Bulldogs Have Two Players & Doubles Team Get to Finals

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville women's tennis team had two players and one doubles team get to the finals in their respective flight this weekend at the UNC Asheville Fall Invitational at the Crowne Plaza Tennis Center.

Senior Devon Cavanaugh easily got to the finals of the White Flight. She defeated Jackie Swan (WCU) 6-3, 6-1 and Tavenne Black (Gardner-Webb) 6-0, 6-0. However, due to an injury Cavanaugh could not play in the finals of the flight and defaulted to Allison Beeler of Georgia Southern.

In the Blue Backdraw flight, freshman Emily McNall earned her way to the finals. She defeated Alexiss Prickett (Georgia Southern) 6-1, 6-2, Caitlin Kitchen (Georgia Southern) 6-1, 6-1, Cameron Williams (Georgia Southern) 6-1, 6-1 before falling to Ainhoa Iglesias-Diaz of Western Carolina, 6-3, 6-3.

The doubles team of Zoe Hamel and Emily McNall reached the finals of the Open Doubles flight. They downed Taylor Jones-Sydney Brown (Georgia Southern) 8-3, Paola Garrido-Scottie French (Georgia Southern, 8-4, Cameron Williams-Allison Beeler (Georgia Southern) before falling in the finals to Alexis Prickett-Natalie Maffett of Georgia Southern, 8-2.

Other singles highlights of the weekend included the play of sophomore Zoe Hamel. In the Blue flight, she advanced to the semifinals by defeating Natalie Maffett (Georgia Southern) 6-3, 6-1 and Caitlin Kitchen (Georgia Southern) 6-3, 6-1. Hamel fell in the semifinals to Erica White of Gardner-Webb, 6-2, 6-3.  

"We had some solid results over the weekend and learned we still have work to do," commented Asheville coach Lise Gregory. "This is a very young team we have and they're still learning about collegiate tennis. Our attitude is excellent, and we will continue to make progress."

The Bulldogs will be off from completion until the weekend of Oct. 7-9 when they participate in the Elon Invitational.
