Wofford Slips Past UNC Asheville Baseball, 9-6

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Wofford scored three times in the top of ninth inning to slip past UNC Asheville 9-6 in college baseball action at McCormick Field Wednesday night.
The Bulldogs (15-22) pounded out 15 hits in the games but left 12 men on base. Grant Gajdosz and Mike Vaughn led Asheville with three hits each. Gajdosz slugged his second homer of the year in the first inning.
With the game tied at 6-6 entering the top of the ninth, pinch-hitter Josh Hyman led off with a single. A sacrifice bunt moved him to second, followed by a walk to Josh McKinney.
With runners on first and second, Hyman and McKinney executed a double steal to put runners on second and third. Konstantine Diamdrous grounded out to short but Hyman scored to put the Terriers in front for good at 7-6. Mac Doyle added some insurance with a two-run homer and a 9-6 lead.
John Cornely allowed a double and a walk to Asheville in the bottom of the ninth inning but then struck out the next three hitters to earn his seventh save of the season.
Asheville had trailed 5-1 after Wofford scored five times in the third. The Bulldogs got a run back in the bottom of the third to cut the lead to 5-2 before scoring four times in the seventh to grab a brief 6-5 lead.
The home team got a clutch two-out single from Ian Graham to narrow the lead to 5-3. A two-run double from Danny Baatz knotted the game at 5-5. Cody Buch's pinch-hit single pushed Asheville in front 6-5.
But Wofford quickly tied it in the eighth. Doyle, who had four RBI on the night, tripled to lead off the inning. He scored on James Foster's infield single.
Asheville gets back in action on Friday when the Bulldogs host Radford at McCormick Field starting at 3 p.m. in a key Big South Conference series.
