ROCK HILL, S.C. – Playing in their final regular season home match of the season the Winthrop women's tennis team swept UNC Asheville 7-0 on Saturday afternoon, as the Bulldogs saw their losing skid extended to six matches while remaining winless in the Big South Conference this season.

With the loss Asheville falls to 6-13 on the season overall with a 0-5 mark in league play while the Lady Eagles improve to 15-11 and 6-1 in the Big South.

The Lady Eagles started off well by taking all three doubles match, giving them the doubles point. In No. 1 doubles, Winthrop's Yasmine Alkema and Lisa Wilkinson fended off Stephanie Schon and Zoe Hamel 8-4. In No. 2 doubles, Sandra Herrera and Sara Abutovic got a win over Britney Cloer and Devon Cavanaugh 8-3. In the No. 3 position, Andressa Garcia and Elizaveta Zaytseva shut out Nicole Schon and Jackie McGuirk 8-0.

Winthrop continued to roll as it took all six matches in the singles round. In No. 1 singles, Alkema took down Cloer 6-0, 6-1, as Zaytseva brought down Cavanaugh 6-3, 7-5 in No. 2 singles. In No. 3 singles, Herrera cruised past Stephanie Schon 6-2, 6-1, as Garcia defeated Hamel 7-5, 6-1 in No. 4 singles. In the No. 5 spot, Abutovic knocked off Nicole Schon 6-2, 6-1, as Wilkinson blanked McGuirk 6-0, 6-0 in No. 6 singles.

Asheville will have a quick turnaround as the Bulldogs will play again on the road this Sunday, taking on conference foe Presbyterian in Clinton, S.C., at 1 p.m. The Blue & White defeated the Blue Hose 7-0 last season at the Crowne Center in Asheville.
