03.11.2011 | Track and Field

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - Natalie Pearson finished first in both the 100 and 200-meter dashes at the Palmetto Classic Friday afternoon as the UNC Asheville Track and Field squads opened the Outdoor season.

Pearson won the 100 meters with a time of 11.87 and then took the 200 meters with a time of 24.36. The senior sprinter went to the NCAA Nationals last year in the 200 meters.

Pearson was not the only Bulldog to have a great day on Friday. Sophomore Melanie Kulesz finished first in the 800 meters with a time of 2:17.81. Emma Bussard took 10th in the event (2:23.19), while Rachel Carson finished 12th (2:23.98).

Ashlei Clodfelter came in second in the javelin with a toss of 38.44 meters. Freshman Meredith Foster took third in the high jump at 1.54 meters.

Corey McClintock had a throw of 34.82 meters and that was good enough for sixth place in the hammer throw. Emily Pineda took eighth in the discus as her best throw was 32.01 meters.

The men's team also had plenty of highlights in the first outdoor meet of the season. They were led by freshman Milan Ristic who garnered second places finishes in the 100 meters and long jump. He had a time of 10.92 in the 100 and had a jump of 7.03 meters.

Senior Simon Haake was a busy man as he competed in three events with impressive results in all of them. He finished second in the discus (40.07 meters), third in the shot put (14.25 meters) and fourth in the hammer throw (46.16 meters). Kurt Hibert took a fourth place finish in the discus (38.83).

Sam Maynard came in third in the 800 meters with a time of 1:56.95. He came in fifth in the 400 meters at 52.42. Sebastian Paniagua took seventh in the 400 meters (54.45) and eighth in the mile (4:43).

Eliud Chirchir finished seventh in the 800 meters (1:58.51), while Carlos Lopez took ninth (2:00).

Courtney Henry finished fifth in the long jump with a leap of 6.55 meters.

Both Bulldog teams are back in action again next weekend in Charlotte at the 49er Classic.
