ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville junior forward Kelli Riles recorded her fifth double-double of the season to help lead the women's basketball team past Brevard College on Wednesday evening, as four Bulldogs posted double-digits in scoring to give Asheville the 74-62 victory.
"We did a good job rebounding the ball tonight," said Asheville head coach Betsy Blose. "In the second half we were able to drive the lane and get to the free throw line, and that was the difference in the game."
Riles led all players with 19 points and 16 rebounds, while freshmen Shonese Jones and Leah Wormack scored 13 apiece. Lindsey Thompson added 11 while Jones dished out five assists.
The Bulldogs improve to 4-7 on the year while Brevard falls to 5-4.
The Tornados also had four players in double figures, with Lacey Singletary leading the way with 13 points. Anna Schlobohm posted a double-double, scoring 12 and pulling down 10 boards. Lindsay Brendle and Micheala Watkins each recorded 10 points while Watkins tallied a team-high four assists.
As a team the Bulldogs pulled down 53 rebounds, one rebound short of their season-high of 54 they recorded against USC Upstate on Nov. 30.
UNC Asheville took a 38-27 lead into halftime, with Jones leading the way with eight points. The Bulldogs then extended their lead to 14 on a Brittany Gwyn 3-pointer coming out of the break but the Tornados would not go away quietly.
Brevard would go on an 18-4 run over the next 10 minutes, tying the game at 45-45 with 9:47 to go on a Brendle free throw. The Tornados then took the lead a minute later on a trey by Watkins.
Asheville would regroup and regain the lead at 51-50 with 8:06 remaining. The two teams traded points back and forth until Singletary put Brevard up 60-58 with 4:03 to go.
Thompson tied the game at 60 at the 3:51 mark before the Bulldogs took the lead for good on a Jones made free throw a minute later. Asheville would finish the game on a 14-2 run, converting 10 attempts from the charity stripe.
Asheville begins Big South Conference play on Saturday afternoon as the Bulldogs travel to High Point to take on the Panthers. The game against HPU is the first of a two-game road swing for the Blue & White, who take on conference newcomer Campbell on Monday.
