Women's Soccer Travels to Campbell Tonight

10.06.2011 | Women's Soccer

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - The UNC Asheville women's soccer team is back on the road tonight as the Bulldogs travel to Campbell for a date with the Camels in a Big South Conference tilt. The match begins at 7 p.m. and can be seen via video-streaming at www.uncabulldogs.com.

Asheville (3-9-0, 2-1-0 BSC) faces a strong challenge tonight. Campbell is 8-3-0 on the season and 2-0-0 in league play. The Camels have won four consecutive matches and have made an immediate impact in their return to the Big South Conference.

The Bulldogs are rapidly improving. After a tough start to the season that saw Asheville lose its first seven matches, Michelle Demko's club has rebounded to win three of their last five games, including a 3-0 victory over Presbyterian College on Tuesday.

"We're playing better and learning with each match," said Demko. "There's still plenty of work to do, and we'll have a tough match with Campbell tonight.  We just want to get better with each match and be playing our best soccer at the end of the season."

This will be the first meeting between the teams since the 2006 season when Asheville defeated Campbell 2-0 in the final regular-season match of the year. The Bulldogs used the momentum of that victory to capture the Big South Conference Tournament and advance to the NCAA Tournament.

After tonight's match, Asheville has some time off and won't play again until it hosts Coastal Carolina at Greenwood Field on Oct. 13 at 3 p.m.

BULLDOG NOTES

UNC Asheville has won three of its last five matches, outscoring its opponents 11-6.

Freshman Amanda Knapp and Kaitlyn Eckert lead the Bulldogs in scoring. The duo has each scored four goals with three assists for 11 points.

Freshman goalkeeper Heather Muller has played every minute of every one of Asheville's 12 matches this season.

Asheville's 3-0 shutout of Presbyterian College was the first for the Bulldogs since a 1-0 blanking of High Point on Nov. 1, 2009.

The Bulldogs lead the all-time series with Campbell 4-2. However, Asheville has never beaten Campbell in league play. The Camels won both matches in 1992 and 1993 when Campbell was in the Big South Conference.
