The stunning victory stopped a three-game Asheville (9-10, 2-5 BSC) losing streak. The Runnin' Bulldogs (13-7, 5-2 BSC) had their four-game winning streak snapped.
Lindsey Mongomery posted a double-double for the visitors as she scored 12 points and collected 13 rebounds. Lindsey Thompson added 11 points as she connected on three 3-pointers in the second half. Breaira Barksdale chipped in nine points, all in the second half. She also had five steals and four assists.
The Bulldogs went on a 7-0 run late in the game to push to a 60-53 lead. Lindsey Thompson hit her third trey of the game to give Asheville a seven-point lead with 2:21 left.
The Bulldogs would not score again as Gardner-Webb scored the next six points to cut the lead to 60-59. Dominque Hudson had a chance to tie the game but could only make 1-of-2 free throws with 13 seconds left. She made the first but missed the second. Thompson grabbed the rebound and was fouled.
She missed the front end of a one-and one and Gardner-Webb came down with the rebound. The Runnin' Bulldogs came down with a chance to win but Monique Hudson's long three-pointer was short and the ball sailed out of bounds as the buzzer sounded to give Asheville its fourth road victory in the last five games.
"I'm really proud of our girls today for finding a way to beat a very good Gardner-Webb team on the road," stated Asheville coach Betsy Blose. "This was by far our best defensive effort of the season. We did a good job mixing up our zones and coming back from an early deficit."
The Bulldogs used different zones the whole game until Gardner-Webb's final possession when they went to a man-to-man.
"We decided to go straight man on the final possession and it seemed to work," admitted Blose.
"Everyone contributed today. Kendall did a great job keeping us in the game in the first half with our scoring. Katie Wise came off the bench in the second half and her defense was tremendous. Bre Barksdale had a good game defensively and scored some big buckets."
Asheville's defense limited Gardner-Webb to just 25 percent (7-of-28) shooting from the field in the second half. The Bulldogs shot 48 percent (12-of-25) from the field in the second half.
Gardner-Webb dominated the first 10 minutes of the game as Sandra Vaitkute used her 6-6 size to score inside. She scored nine early points to allow the Runnin' Bulldogs to race to a 22-11 lead.
Asheville rallied in the final 10 minutes thanks to Shepard. She scored 10 of her 12 first-half points to get the Bulldogs within 36-31 at halftime.
UNC Asheville is back on the road Monday night when the Bulldogs travel to Presbyterian College starting at 7 p.m.
"We can enjoy this game for a little while but not too long," commented Blose. "Presbyterian is a good team, and we'll have to be ready to play."
