CONWAY, S.C. – UNC Asheville's Lindsey Montgomery and Kelli Riles each recorded double-doubles against Coastal Carolina on Saturday afternoon at the Kimbel Arena as the Bulldogs picked up their first Big South Conference victory of the season with a 65-53 decision over the Chanticleers in women's basketball action.
The win for the Bulldogs snapped a three-game losing skid and was the first victory for the Blue & White in Conway, S.C. since the 2006-07 season. Asheville also matches its win total from last season with the 12-point win.
Montgomery and fellow senior Kendall Shepard each scored a game-high 13 points with Riles chipping 12 to the Asheville total. Lindsey Thompson scored 11 points for the Bulldogs who improve to 8-7 overall and 1-3 in the Big South.
“This was a great win for us on the road,” said Asheville head coach Betsy Blose. “We played a more consistent 40 minutes and we showed good balance. We didn't shoot the ball particularly well but our defense did a good job of getting us the lead.”
Asheville held Coastal to 29.2 percent shooting from the floor including 26.5 percent in the second half.
The Chanticleers were led on offense by Sydnei Moss who scored 10 points in 29 minutes of action. Shanika Maddox pulled down a team-high nine rebounds and Katie White posted four blocks for CCU. Coastal falls to 6-9 on the season and 0-3 in conference play.
Montgomery and Riles each pulled down 11 rebounds for the Bulldogs with Thompson contributing seven. It was Riles' seventh double-double of the season and the third for Montgomery.
The Bulldogs jumped out to an early lead in the first half and led 18-11 with 9:58 to go in the frame. Asheville would keep the Chanticleers at arm's length the rest of the half and took a 33-25 lead into the break.
The two teams traded points back-and-forth over the first five minutes before a Shepard 3-pointer put the Bulldogs up by 10 at 40-30 with 14:55 to go. Asheville would push its lead to as much as 15 before eventually earning the 12-point victory.
The Bulldogs will play at Charleston Southern on Monday evening in their next contest. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. on the campus of the Buccaneers. Coastal is set to host Big South foe Gardner-Webb on Monday at the Kimbel Arena.
