Volleyball to Compete at Gamecock Invitational

Asheville Rolls Over Mercer, 3-0

09.28.2010 | Women's Volleyball

MACON, Ga. – In its first contest since its dramatic 3-2 victory over Big South Conference foe Coastal Carolina, the UNC Asheville volleyball team earned a 3-0 win over non-conference opponent Mercer on Tuesday evening, earning victories of 25-21, 25-17, 25-16 to improve to 9-6 on the season.

“It was good win,” said head coach Julie Torbett. “Sometimes you come out flat after a big win like we had against Coastal, but our team did a good job of maintaining control of the match the entire time. It also extended our win streak heading into some big conference matches this weekend.”

Junior outside hitter Cindi Miller led the match in kills with 12 while teammate Kelsey Benorden finished second on the team with 10. Libero Alex Stewart recorded a team-high 16 digs with Benorden and Miller adding 15 apiece.

Miller was also effective at the net on defense, recording four blocks (one solo) in the three-set victory.

For Mercer, Jamie Duffy recorded a team-high 10 kills with Amiee Frutchey recording 7. The Asheville defense held the Bears' offense to team hitting percentage of .059, with three players hitting in the negative.

Charlotte Harris and Frutchey recorded 20 and 18 digs, respectively, for the Bears and Libby Hansch added three blocks.

The Bulldogs will next be back in action on this weekend when they hit the road for a pair of conference matches. Asheville will take on the Highlanders of Radford on Friday evening at 6 p.m. before squaring off against the Panthers of High Point on Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m.
