Women's Tennis Has Impressive Showing at UNC Asheville Open

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville women's tennis team finished up the first annual UNC Asheville Open with some impressive results over the weekend at the Crowne Plaza Tennis Center.
Devon Cavanaugh and Stephanie Schon were declared co-champions of the women's grand singles flight. Both players advanced to the chamipionship match and did not play the finals.
The Bulldogs had two doubles team reach the semifinals of the doubles flight. Zoe Hamel and Stephanie Schon earned a spot in the semifinals with two wins, while Chelsea Hall and Cavanaugh also got to the semifinals with two victories.
In the backdraw singles finals, Nicole Schon and Hamel got to the finals with Hamel winning the match in a long third set, 16-14.
"We had some nice results this weekend from our women's team," commented Asheville coach Lise Gregory. "For the first time out, I thought the team did a good job competing and played well overall. There is plenty to work on but it's a good start."
Asheville is back in action on Oct. 8 when it competes in the Elon Invitational.
