JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. -- In their third and final match of the 2010 Buccaneer Classic the UNC Asheville volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision to host ETSU, falling by the final of 25-14, 22-25, 25-23, 25-20. Junior outside hitter Cindi Miller was named to the All-Tournament team for her efforts on the weekend, tallying 47 kills and 30 digs for the event.
Miller led the Bulldogs once again on offense, recording 14 kills and two service aces. Middle hitter Jenna Dover finished second on the team in kills with eight while hitting for a .368 average. Rachel Guinane recorded 26 assists and Alex Stewart tallied 12 digs on defense. The Bulldogs fall to 4-6 on the young season with the loss.
The Bucs were led on offense by Megan Devine, who racked up 16 kills on just 33 attacks recording a hitting percentage of .364 in the process. McKayla Barber and Alysa Long each posted 10 kills and setter Whitney Cogburn earned 53 assists in directing the ETSU attack. The Buccaneers improve to 6-4 with the victory.
The first set saw the Bucs run out to a 17-10 lead before Asheville took a timeout to try to regroup. However, the ETSU offense was too much for the Bulldogs to handle as the home-standing Bucs would win going away, 25-14.
In the second frame the Bulldogs net defense stepped up to the tune of five total blocks, including five blocks by Meredith Foster (one solo). They also forced 12 attack errors by the ETSU offense, the most in any set for the Bucs. The Blue & White would win the set 25-22 and tie the match at one set apiece.
The pivotal third set would essentially decide the match in favor of the Buccaneers. The two teams would battle to a 22-22 tie, but Devine would record three kills over the last four rallies to give the Bucs the 25-23 victory.
The Bulldogs would fall behind early in the fourth set and would be unable to catch up with the Bucs. Asheville never trailed by more than five points, eventually falling by that deficit 25-20.
Asheville will next be in action on Sept. 18 when they take part in a dual match with North Carolina A&T and region rival Western Carolina in Cullowhee, N.C. The Bulldogs will face A&T at 4 p.m. before taking on the Catamounts at 7 p.m.
