Asheville Drops Match To UNC Greensboro, 3-1
09.10.2010 | Women's Volleyball
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. -- Outside hitters Kelsey Benorden and Cindi Miller each posted 18 kills with Miller recording a .300 hitting percentage, but the UNC Asheville volleyball team could not slow down a high-powered UNC Greensboro attack on Friday evening as the Spartans defeated the Bulldogs, 3-1 (25-20, 25-21, 21-25, 25-23) in the first game of the 2010 Buccaneer Classic hosted by ETSU.
“I thought Cindi and Kelsey played awesome today,” said Asheville head coach Julie Torbett. “They are really keeping us in matches. We're almost there, we've just got to execute better. We've got another week before conference play starts so hopefully some of our younger players will figure things out.”
The Bulldogs (4-4) tallied 51 team kills while hitting for a .231 mark as a team, but UNCG (8-1) posted 60 team kills, recording an impressive .356 hitting percentage in the four-set victory. Four Spartans tallied nine or more kills with Caley Redden leading the way with 16.
In the first set the two teams battled to a 10-10 tie in the early goings. Greensboro would go on an 11-4 run over the next 15 points until Miller was able to record a kill to break the Spartans' momentum. The Bulldogs would finish the set outscoring Greensboro 6-4 but the early deficit was too much to overcome.
In the second set the Spartans were able to slowly pull away from Asheville midway through the frame. Once again UNCG was able to build enough of a lead to stymie any chance of a Bulldog comeback as the Spartans took the second set 25-21.
Once again the two teams would trade points back and forth until the score was tied at 20. Asheville's Rachel Guinane would serve three big points including a service ace to give the Bulldogs set-point at 24-20 before eventually winning 25-21.
In the final set the Bulldogs fought tooth and nail to force a fifth set, clawing their way to a 22-22 tie, but the Spartans would reach 25 first to take the set 25-23 and the match 3-1.
Guinane would record 36 assists in the match to lead all players with Benorden posting a team-high 11 digs. UNCG's Kellie Orewiler tallied a match-high 15 digs with setters Ari Lysacek (28) and Kimiko Naito (17) combining for 45 assists.
The Bulldogs will close out the Buccaneer Classic tomorrow with matches against Austin Peay at 10 a.m. and host team ETSU at 7 p.m.
