ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Freshman forward Tarrah Tate scored the only goal in a scrimmage as UNC Asheville outlasted Appalachian State, 1-0 at Greenwood Field Tuesday afternoon.

The teams played three 30-minute halves in the scrimmage and substituted freely as both teams are trying to get ready for the start of the 2010 season. Tate's goal came in the second 30-minute period.

First-year coach Michelle Demko of UNC Asheville was delighted with her team's effort on Tuesday.

"Playing an opponent the caliber of Appalachian State was a great experience for our young team today," stated Demko. "You need scrimmages like this to find out how you're doing and what you need to work on.

"I thought we did a great job competing and battling for 90 minutes," added Demko. "This was a nice result. We still have plenty of work to do, but overall I liked the way we played."

Sophomore Asheville goalkeeper Megan Dent picked up the shutout in the scrimmage and made several saves throughout the day.

The Bulldogs open the regular season this Sunday when East Tennessee State comes to Greenwood Field. The match starts at 2 p.m. and admission is free.
