ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Justin Schumer had four hits and earned a win on the mound as UNC Asheville downed Gardner-Webb 7-3 in the first game of a Big South Conference double-header at Greenwood Field.

The win by the Bulldogs gave them the seventh seed in next week's Big South Conference Tournament at Winthrop. Asheville will face sixth-seeded VMI Tuesday in the play-in round starting at 4 p.m.

In the second game, Jake Watts had three hits and five RBI as the Runnin' Bulldogs built an 11-0 lead before holding off a dramatic Asheville (17-34, 10-17 BSC) comeback to win, 15-14.  Schumer had a great day at the plate in the second game, going 4-for-5 with two home runs and four RBI. He went 8-for-10 on the day.

Aaron Miller added three hits and four RBI for the Runnin Bulldogs in the second game. The win went to starter Emilio Pagan (2-2) who pitched the first 2.1 innings. Brock Wilson got the final two outs for his first save of the year

In the first game.  Gardner-Webb jumped in front in the first inning when Adam McFarland hit a solo home run to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

The Bulldogs came back in the bottom of the first with three straight hits. Jordan Lurie opened the inning with a single. He went to third on Danny Baatz's bloop single to center field. Schumer tied the game with a run-scoring single to center at 1-1. Mike Vaughn's fielder's choice plated Baatz for a 2-1 Asheville lead.

The home team added to the lead in the second with a run.  Baatz's RBI-single plated Lurie to make the score 3-1. Asheville could have had more but a great throw by right-fielder Adam McFarland was able to get Buch out at the plate for the second out of the inning.

The Bulldogs got some insurance in the fifth from Beau Zinman. With runners on first and second and one out, Zinman hit his third home run of the year over the left-field wall to give Asheville a 7-1 lead.

Schumer (2-6) earned the win by pitching the first four innings of the game. It was pre-determined that he would only pitch four innings, making him eligible to get the win. Drew Spear pitched the final five innings to earn his first save of the season.
