SPARTANBURG, S.C. - USC Upstate scored an unearned run in the bottom of the eighth inning as the Spartans edged UNC Asheville 4-3 in non-conference baseball action Tuesday night.

The Bulldogs were led at the plate by Catlin Carter, Robert McIntosh and Danny Baatz with two hits each. Grier Harrington pitched seven solid innings for Asheville as a starter. He scattered eight hits, allowed three runs, while striking out three and walking just one.

The Bulldogs (7-14) trailed 3-2 entering the top of the eighth innng but rallied to tie the game at 3-3. With two outs and nobody on base, Asheville hitters earned three straight walks to load the bases. Freshman second baseman Robert McIntosh's infield single scored Cody Buch to knot the game.

A throwing error in the bottm of the eighth allowed Tyler Cook to score the winning run for USC Upstate.

The Spartans picked up a run in the second inning to lead 1-0. Asheville took its only lead of the game in the fifth when it scored two runs. Jacob Edwards led the inning off with a single. Carter followed with a triple to right-center, scoring Edwards to tie the game at 1-1. A throwing error on the play, allowed Carter to score to put Asheville in front. 2-1.

The Spartans grabbed the lead right back in the bottom of the frame with two runs thanks to three hits and a stolen base to go back in front, 3-2.

UNC Asheville plays next at Furman on Wednesday night starting at 6 p.m.
