Pearson Competes at NCAA National Meet

Pearson Takes First in the 100 and 200 Meters at Western Carolina

CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Senior sprinter Natalie Pearson took first in both the 100 and 200 meters races on Saturday to highlight UNC Asheville's performance at the Beynon Sports Surfaces Catamount Classic held at Western Carolina.

Pearson blew away the field in both events. She took first in the 100 with a time of 11.51. In the 200, Natalie finished first with a time of 23.91.

Both Bulldog teams had plenty of other great moments throughout the day. Highlights included senior Corrie Trotter placing second in the high jump with a leap of 1.50 meters. Freshman Ashlei Clodfelter also finished in second place in the javelin. She threw the javelin 36.09 meters. She finished 10th in the long jump at 4.92 meters. 

Emily Pineda took sixth place in the discus with a toss of 36.33 meters. Her sister Rebekah finished eighth in the hammer throw with a throw of 36.29 meters. She took 10th in the discus at a time of 34.28 meters. Krristina Chick came in ninth in the shot put (9.61) and 10th in the hammer throw (33.35).

Freshman Alyska Kalmeijer took fifth in the 800 meters at a time of 2:22. Katie Olert came in 11th at 2:30. Freshman Kylie Smith placed sixth in the 1500 meters at a time of 5:12.

Whitney Stafford finished fourth in the 400 Hurdles at 1:06 and then took seventh in the 100 Hurdles at a time of 15.68.

In the 400 meters, Sarah Gentry came in fifth at 58.96, while Eureka Jones finished seventh with a time of 1:00.30. Rachel Ambrosia took 11th in the 5000 meters (20:38) and Erin Putnam 13th (21:11).

The men's team placed three runners in the top eight in the 800. Sam Maynard took third at 1:53.56, followed closely by Eliud Chirchir in fourth at 1:53.57. Carlos Lopez took eighth at 1:58. Chris Murray finished 17th with a time of 2:05.  Kent Rankin finished 10th in the 1500 meters at 4:10. Adam Schnapp took 18th at 4:15.

Billy Enright highlighted the field events with a sixth-place finish in the javelin with a throw of 49.34 meters. Simon Haake finished seventh in the high jump (1.68) and 10th in the shot put (12.62).

Raymond Urrutia took 10th in the 200 meters (21.90) and 14th in the 400 (51.23).

Both teams will be in action again this Friday when the Bulldogs compete at the Duke Relays.
