Pearson Competes at NCAA National Meet

Pearson Wins the 100 and 200 Meters at Duke Invitational

DURHAM, N.C. - Natalie Pearson won both the 100 and 200 meters and set school records in the process to highlight UNC Asheville's efforts at the Duke Invitational Saturday at Wallace Wade Stadium.

Pearson won the 100 meters with a school-best time of 11.71. She then captured the 200 meters with a record-setting time of 23.62.

Also setting a school record for the Bulldogs on the men's side was senior Simon Haake in the javelin. Haake established another record in the javelin with a throw of 63.81 meters. He finished second in the event.

"Overall, we had some very good results," commented Asheville coach Jesse Norman. "Natalie ran just great once again this weekend. We think she may have qualified for the regional with her time in 100 and 200.

"Simon had another record-setting day in the javelin," added Norman. "We think he may have qualified for a regional, as well.

"There are still some things to work but all in all we had a good effort at Duke," stated Norman.

Some other highlights on the women's side came from distance runners Melanie Kulesz and Alyska Kalmeijer in the 1500 meters. Kulesz posted a time of 4:50, while Kalmeijer had a time of 4:56. Kylie Smith finished with a time of 20:22 in the 5000 meters.

Sarah Gentry posted a time of 58.68 and finished 18th in the 400 meters.  In the 100 High Hurdles, Whitney Stafford had a time of 16.66. Ashley Hunt competed and had a time of 17.79. Stafford posted a time of 1:07 in the 400 High Hurdles.

Emma Bussard finished 21st in the 3000 Steeplechase at 12:27. Rachel Ambrosia took 22nd with a time of 12:55.

Ashlei Clodfelter battled hard in the javelin had a throw of 36.95 meters. Rebekah Pineda had a throw of 37.08 meters in the Hammer Throw.

On the men's side, freshman Raymond Urrutia finished 17th in the 100 meters at 11.15. He was also in the 200 meters and posted a time of 22.54. Jordan Yarbrough had a time of 11.20 in the 100 and 23.01 in the 200.

Sam Maynard finished 13th in a tough field in the 800 meters at 1:52. Eliud Chirchir had a time of 1:54 in the 800.

In the 1500, Maynard was 14th at 3:57, Chirchir was 16th at 3:58 and Carlos Lopez took 19th at 3:59.

Kent Rankin posted a time of 15:45 in the 5000 meters. Jeremy Harn had a throw of 12.95 meters in the shot put.
