Pearson Captures 200 Meters at Coastal Carolina Invitational

CONWAY, S.C. - Senior sprinter Natalie Pearson made her outdoor debut a successful one as she captured the 200 meters at the Coastal Carolina Invitational on Saturday. Both UNC Asheville men's and women's Outdoor Track and Field squads opened the 2010 season this weekend.
Pearson finished first in the 200 with a time of 24.01. She took first in a field of 80 runners. The 24.01 was a new school record breaking the previous time of 24.22
On the men's side, Simon Haake too fourth in the javelin with a throw of 60.98 meters. His throw set a new school record. Nick Mozzone finished seventh in the high jump at 1.85 meters.
Eli Chirchir, Sam Maynard, Carlos Lopez and Kent Rankin teamed up in the 3,200 meter relay to finish second with a time of 7:49.59.
Another highlight on the women's side were distance runners Melanie Kulesz and Emma Bussard. Kulesz finished 10th in the 1500 meters at a time of 4:53. Bussard took 10th in the 3000 Steeplechase at a time of 12:03.
The women's 3,200-relay team of Alyska Kalmeijer, Kylie Smith, Katie Olert and Kulesz earned a fifth-place finish. They finished with a time of 9:58.73.
Both teams return to action next weekend at the 49er Classic hosted by Charlotte.
