Maynard Leads Bulldogs at Big South Indoor Meet

CLEMSON, S.C. - Sam Maynard finished fourth in the 800 meters and helped the distance medley relay team finish fourth to highlight the UNC Asheville Indoor Track and Field's team's performance at the Big South Indoor Meet this weekend.
Maynard finished the 800 meters with a time of 1:55. He was part of distance medley relay team of Eliud Chirchir, Raymond Urrutia and Carlos Lopez that took fourth at a time of 10:31.
On the women's side, distance runner Melanie Kulesz finished eighth in the 3000 meters (10:33) and ninth (5:20) in the mile to highlight Asheville's performance. She also helped anchor the distance medley relay team to a fifth place finish. The other runners with Kulesz were Katie Olert, Sarah Gentry, Alyska Kalmeijer.
Carlos Lopez earned Asheville a point in the mile with a time of 4:22. The 4x400 relay team of Derek Larsen, Urrutia, Chirchir and Maynard finished seventh at 3:29.
In the field events, Nick Mozzone earned the Bulldogs a point in the high jump with an eighth place finish at 1.90 meters. Corrie Trotter also finished eighth in the high jump with a leap of 1.53 meters.
"We had a lot of people set personal records and lifetime bests this weekend," stated Asheville coach Jesse Norman. "I thought we competed better than we have the past few years. There is still plenty of work to do for our program but we made strides during the indoor season."
Katie Olert and Simon Haake earned spots on the Big South All-Academic Team.
