Chirchir Takes 1st in Mile at Mountaineer Open

BOONE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville men's and women's indoor track and field
teams complete their final preparations before the Big South Conference at the
Mountaineer Open hosted by Appalachian State Thursday evening.
"I'm pretty happy with the results that we got what we needed from this meet."
stated Norman. "Now it's time to get rested for conference next week"
Eli Chirchir led the way for the Bulldog men with a first-place finish
in the 800 (1:54.62). In the process, he also set a new school record
breaking the previous record held by Jim Phillips (1:55.09)
Fellow teammate, Sam Maynard finished fifth with a time of 1:57.42.
Other highlights on the men's side included Simon Haake finishing in fourth place
in the triple jump (12.05m), while Carlos Lopez took sixth in the mile (4:31.66).
Jordan Yarbrough brought home a sixth place finish in the long jump (6.53m).
Yarbrough's leap placed him third on the Asheville career list. He also placed seventh in the 55-
meter dash with a time of 6.68. Yarbrough advanced to the finals after he posted a preliminary time of 6.58, which ranks him number three all-time on the career list at Asheville.
On the women's side, Katie Olert finished fifth in the mile with a
time of 5:41.79. Fellow teammate, Emma Bussard finished 10th with a
time of 5:53.95.
Other highlights included Rebekah Pineda placing ninth in the
weight throw (11.33m). Kristina Chick took 11th in the weight throw (9.87m). Pineda and Chick
also finshed 10th and 11thh in the shot put with throws of 9.91m
and 9.90m respectively.
Both teams will return to action Feb. 27-28 at the Big South
Conference Championships hosted by Clemson University.
