BOONE, N.C. -- Despite a career-high 29 points from junior guard Lindsey Thompson the UNC Asheville women's basketball team suffered a 99-71 setback to region rival Appalachian State on Thursday evening at the Holmes Center on the campus of the Mountaineers.
“We played a very good team in Appalachian State and gave up way too many points,” said Asheville head coach Betsy Blose. “We didn't contest their shooters enough and needed to commit more to the defensive end of the floor. We've also got to get more from our bench.”
Thompson's 29 was also a game-high as she was one of three Bulldogs to score in double figures. Kendall Shepard scored 16 and Breaira Barksdale scored 10 in the loss. The Asheville starting five accounted for 66 total points with the bench contributing only five on the night. With the loss the Bulldogs fall to 3-3 on the year with a 1-1 mark on the road.
ASU improved their record to 6-1 on the season with the 28-point victory. The Mountaineers had six players score in double figures with Sam Ramirez scoring 22 and Ashlen Dewart scoring 21. ASU's Kelsey Sharkey recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Anna Freeman chipped in 16 points to go along with eight assists in the contest.
Thompson was the lone bright spot for the Bulldogs in the first half, as she posted 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting. Riles pulled down five rebounds and Kendall Shepard picked up four assists.
In the first half Ramirez posted 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting including three 3-pointers. Ramirez also had four assists to lead ASU. Freeman was also in double digits with 12 for the Mountaineers. The high-pressure ASU defense forced 13 turnovers by the Bulldogs. As a team the Mountaineers shot 63.9 percent from the floor in the frame.
The Mountaineers led 53-31 heading into the break.
The Bulldogs showed improvement in the second half committing only six turnovers against the press defense of the Mountaineers, but the Mountaineers' offense was still rolling. For the game ASU shot an impressive field goal percentage of 56.6. ASU also won the rebounding margin, 45-to-28.
Appalachian State is now 12-3 lifetime against the Bulldogs.
The Blue & White will be back in action on Saturday, Dec. 11, when the Bulldogs host Furman in a contest set to begin at 2 p.m. That game is part of a doubleheader with the men's team, who will take on Montreat College at 4:30 p.m.
