ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women's basketball team dropped a 71-61 decision to Brevard College on Monday evening at the Justice Center as the Bulldogs could never get their offense on track, converting 36.8 percent of their shots from the floor and making only 7-of-14 free throw attempts.
The Tornadoes converted on eight 3-pointers en route to shooting 40.4 percent for the game. BC went to the line 30 times and made 17 attempts on their way to the 10-point victory, as they improve to 4-4 on the season.
Asheville got a game-high 18 points from senior guard Kendall Shepard who also garnered seven rebounds, six assists and four steals in over 39 minutes of play. Kelli Riles recorded her third double-double of the season with 14 points and 14 rebounds while Lindsey Thompson had 13 points and nine rebounds.
Along with Riles, Shepard and Thompson, starters Breaira Barksdale and Grace Blaylock accounted for 59 of the Bulldogs' 61 points as they fall to 3-2 on the year.
Brevard's bench chipped in 30 points to the Tornadoes' total, with Anna Schlobohm leading the way with 13 points.
The Tornadoes took a 34-23 lead into halftime as the Blue & White turned the ball over 14 times in the opening frame. Brevard also sunk five 3-pointers in the first half to distance themselves from the Bulldogs.
The second half saw Asheville try to fight its way back into the contest, but the Bulldogs could never cut the Brevard lead to less than six points in the entire half. In the end the Tornadoes were able to ice the game with free throws as Asheville could not buy a 3-pointer in the second half.
The Bulldogs will have to regroup quickly as they will play Southern Conference opponent and region-rival Appalachian State on Thursday evening on the campus of the Mountaineers. The game is scheduled for 7 p.m.
