CHARLESTON, S.C. – In a match that featured 44 tie scores and 19 lead changes the UNC Asheville volleyball team outlasted Big South Conference foe Charleston Southern to earn a 3-2 victory over a scrappy Buccaneers squad that hadn't lost to the Bulldogs at home since the 2006 season.

With the win the Bulldogs to 12-7 on the season with a 5-1 mark in Big South play while CSU falls to 6-13 overall and 1-5 in conference.

“It was an exciting match and Charleston Southern played phenomenally,” said UNC Asheville head coach Julie Torbett. “They didn't play like a 1-5 Big South team and it was nice for my seniors to finally get a win in Charleston.”

The past five matches between the two teams have gone five sets with both teams winning their home contests. Asheville's last victory in Charleston was on Nov. 3 of 2006 when the Bulldogs earned a 3-1 decision over the Buccaneers at the CSU Field House.

Asheville dropped the first set 26-24 before rebounding to take the second frame 25-23. The third set saw the CSU take a 2-1 lead in the match with a 25-22 decision with the Bulldogs coming from behind to take the fourth set 27-25. The fifth set saw the Blue & White prevail for a 15-12 set win and a 3-2 match victory, winning the contest on a Cindi Miller Killer.

Miller and teammate Kelsey Benorden each recorded 23 kills for the Bulldogs with Holly Shelton chipping in 11 of her own. Shelton was also effective at the net defensively, accounting for five blocks on the night. Hallie Morse (28 assists) and Rachel Guinane (27 assists) recorded 55 assists while splitting time at setter and libero Alex Stewart tallied 14 digs to lead the Bulldogs.

Charleston Southern's Amanda Hill posted a match-high 31 kills while hitting for a .349 average. Fellow Buccaneer Cori Holeman added 15 kills to CSU's total and setter Amy Nokes earning 58 assists in directing her offense. Tricia Rodl led the match in digs with 24 with Hill recording 21 digs of her own.

The Bulldogs will be back in action on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Rock Hill, S.C., to take on the Winthrop Eagles. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
