ROCK HILL, S.C. – Playing in their fifth Big South Conference road match in eight days the UNC Asheville volleyball team rallied late but could not complete a comeback against league foe Winthrop on Saturday afternoon as the Eagles survived their bout with the Bulldogs, earning a 3-1 victory.

With the victory Winthrop stays tied for first place with Liberty having improved to 5-1 in conference play with the victory over Asheville. The Eagles are now 8-10 overall on the season.

The Bulldogs went down 2-0 in the match after losing sets of 25-21 and 25-22 before picking up the 25-21 victory in the third frame. In the final set the Bulldogs found themselves down 22-16 prior to a furious comeback by the Blue & White to tie the game at 24-24. However, the rally would fall short as the Eagles were able to record the final two points of the match, winning on a kill by Kelsey Harrison – her only kill of the day.

“Our young team showed a lot of character today,” said Asheville head coach Julie Torbett. “We had a great comeback in the fourth set and I was really pleased with how our team showed a lot of fight after being down 0-2.”

The Bulldogs fall to 12-8 overall with a 5-2 mark in the Big South. The loss also drops Asheville out of a tie for first place in the league.

Outside hitter Cindi Miller paced the Bulldogs' offense once again earning a match-high 20 kills. Kelsey Benorden added 12 kills to Asheville's total, with Rachel Guinane (23) and Hallie Morse (12) combining for 35 assists while splitting time at setter. Defensive specialist Rachel Wells posted a team high 20 digs in limited action while Holly Shelton secured seven blocks on the day. Miller chipped in 18 digs defensively with Benorden adding 17.

Winthrops Kaley Viola tallied a team-high 16 kills while teammates Carolyn Weed and Becca Toor contributed 15 and 12 kills, respectively, to the Eagles' total of 64. Stephanie Palmer recorded 50 assists directing traffic for the Eagles and libero Kelsey Harrison earned a match-high 31 digs in the four-set match.

The match did feature 19 tie scores and seven lead changes with neither team hitting the ball particularly well. Winthrop hit .129 as a team with Asheville faring no better, hitting .127 collectively. The Bulldogs did record 12.0 total blocks (two solo) against the Winthrop offense.

Asheville will have the week off before playing in its next match. The Bulldogs will welcome league-leading Liberty to the Justice Center next Saturday, Oct. 16, in a contest scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
