CLINTON, S.C. – Senior outside hitter Kelsey Benorden recorded a match-high 21 kills and the Bulldogs' defense was dominant at the net as the UNC Asheville volleyball team picked up a 3-1 Big South Conference victory over league foe Presbyterian College on Tuesday evening.

The Bulldogs (11-7, 4-1 Big South) recorded 12.5 blocks on the night, with three different players recording six block assists. Presbyterian (8-10, 1-3 Big South) won the first set of the night, 25-22, only to have Asheville rally to take the next three frames, 25-16, 26-24 and 27-25.

“This was an amazing match,” said Asheville head coach Julie Torbett. “Our blocking was great and Kelsey (Benorden) played awesome. We had an amazing comeback in the third set, rallying from 19-13 down and winning 26-24. To their credit, Presbyterian didn't quit, battling us to a 27-25 final in the last set.”

Benorden, who had been struggling offensively that past couple of weeks, broke out of her slump for 21 kills while recording a .347 hitting percentage. She committed only four attack errors on 49 attempts. Fellow outside hitter Cindi Miller added 14 kills to the Bulldogs' total, her 14th match this season with double digit kills.

Hallie Morse and Rachel Guinane recorded 27 and 16 assists, respectively, while splitting time at setter and freshman Alex Stewart led Asheville in digs with 15. Jenna Dover, Meredith Foster and Holly Shelton were the three Bulldogs to record six block assists, with Dover adding seven kills from the right side.

The Blue Hose were led on offense by Presley Mabrey, who tallied 20 kills. Teammates Amanda Kettles (17) and Lisa Shelley (14) also posted double digit kills in the match. Setter Kilee Ruppe posted an impressive 53 assists in directing the Presbyterian offense, while the defense recorded 75 digs and 4.0 blocks.

The win for the Bulldogs keeps them atop the Big South standings, tied with Liberty and Winthrop for the league lead. Asheville will be back in action on Friday evening when the Bulldogs travel to Charleston, S.C., to take on conference opponent Charleston Southern.
