Women's Basketball Falls at Gardner-Webb, 70-54

Lindsey Montgomery (5-10, 1-2 BSC) led Asheville with 18 points. Chioma Okoli added 14 points. She was 12-of-16 from the free throw line. Kendall Shepard finished with 10 points.
Gardner-Webb (13-3, 2-1 BSC) was led by Dominque Hudson and Courtney Epps with 19 points each Margaret Roundtree chipped in 11 points, while Sandra Vaitkute had 10 points and three blocked shots.
The Bulldogs stunned the home team early as Montgomery scored eight straight points to help Asheville race to a 19-11 lead at the 8:35 mark. The visitors also got treys from Lindsey Thompson and Shepard.
Gardner-Webb, which owns wins over Purdue and Liberty this season, began to rally and took a 24-23 lead on a jumper from LaTroya Hope with two minutes left in the half.
Asheville scored the next four points, all from the foul line, as Okoli hit three free throws to push the Bulldogs back in front. 27-24. A bucket from Gardner-Webb cut the lead to 27-26 at halftime.
In the second half, Montgomery hit her second trey of the year to give Asheville a 32-30 lead but then the home team exploded.
Gardner-Webb went on a 20-0 run over the next nine minutes to race to a 50-32 lead. The Bulldogs missed nine straight shots and turned the ball over seven times during the run. Epps hit four of her five 3-pointers during the run.
The Bulldogs kept battling and closed to 57-45 on a free throw from Okoli with 4:33 left but could get no closer.
Asheville plays next at Big South Conference foe Presbyterian College this Monday night at 7 p.m. The game can be heard on (WISE 1310-AM) radio with the pre-game show starting at 6:30 p.m.
