Charleston Southern Edges Asheville in Overtime 77-74

Sexton's bucket put CSU in front 76-74. The Bulldogs tried to tie the game but J.P. Primm's shot was blocked in the lane by Kenny Mitchell with five seconds left to keep CSU in front. Kelvin Martin was fouled with three seconds left. He made one-of-two free throws to put the Bucs in front 77-74. His second free throw missed and was rebounded by John Williams. Williams shot from the CSU foul-line hit the rim but bounced away to send the Bulldogs to their sixth straight loss.
Asheville (3-12, 1-4 BSC) was led by a career-high 15 points and 15 rebounds from freshman center D.J. Cunningham. Primm had team-high 16 points, nine assists and four turnovers. Williams finished with his first double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Jamarco Warren led the Buccaneers (8-8, 3-3 BSC) with a game-high 23 points. He was 5-of-10 from beyond the arc. Martin finished with 21 points, while Sexton chipped in 18 points.
In overtime, the teams exchanged the lead eight times until Sexton's bucket. Asheville had just went ahead on a Primm lay-up in traffic with 53 seconds left at 74-73.
The Bulldogs created overtime with a wild comeback in the final minute of play. Warren hit a trey with 1:15 left to put CSU in front 61-56.
With less than a minute to play, Matt Dickey missed a three-pointer that was rebounded by Primm. He scored on a lay-up and was fouled with 48 seconds left. Primm missed the free throw but Cunningham came down with the rebound. Dickey fed Williams who scored on a lay-up to cut the lead to 61-60 at the 43-second mark.
Martin hit two free throws with 27 seconds left to push the CSU lead to 63-60. Dickey then scored on a driving lay-up and was fouled at the 18-second mark. His free throw tied the game at 63-63.
The Bucs played for the last shot but never got one off as Warren threw the ball away with four seconds remaining.
The Bulldogs trailed 29-27 at halftime but went on a 10-0 early in the second half as Sean Smith and Primm hit back-to-back three-pointers to race to a 45-36 lead with 10 minutes left.
The visitors slowly clawed their way back in the game behind great shooting from their guards. Warren's two free throws to complete their comeback as CSU led 56-55 with 2:44 left.
Charleston Southern shot 50 percent (27-of-54) from the field for the game and went 9-of-19 from the perimeter for 47 percent. The Bucs shot 71 percent (5-of-7) from the field in overtime.
Asheville dominated the backboards as it out-rebounded CSU 45-31 and outscored the Bucs 50-27 in the paint.
UNC Asheville begins a two-game road trip on Thursday when the Bulldogs play at VMI at 7 p.m. Charleston Southern hosts High Point Thursday evening at 7 p.m.
