01.07.2010 | Men's Basketball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Chad Gray's basket with 5.5 seconds left gave Coastal Carolina a dramatic 58-57 Big South Conference victory over UNC Asheville Thursday afternoon.

The last-second bucket gave the Chanticleers (15-2, 5-0 BSC) their 11th straight victory, while the Bulldogs (3-11, 1-3 BSC) lost their fourth straight game.

Gray finished with 18 points, 16 in the second half. Kierre Greenwood added 12 points and eight rebounds. Logan Johnson chipped in 11 points.

Asheville (3-11, 1-3 BSC) was led by sophomore guard J.P. Primm's 18 points. Matt Dickey came off the bench to score 17 points. Primm also had six assists and four steals.

"This is a tough one to lose," stated Bulldog coach Eddie Biedenbach. "We played pretty well but Coastal made a play at the end to win the game."

The Bulldogs trailed by six points with 4:17 left after Greenwood scored on a lay-up to push the score to 54-48.

Dickey knocked down a three-pointer to cut the lead to 54-51. Sean Smith scored on the next possession to narrow the lead to 54-53. Dickey was fouled at the 1:24 mark and made one free throw to knot the game at 54-54.

Greenwood ended the Asheville run by making two foul shots with 1:06 remaining to put the Chanticleers in front 56-54.

The Bulldogs took the lead at the 33-second mark when a wide-open Smith knocked down a three-pointer off an inbounds pass from Primm to give Asheville a 57-56 lead.

Coastal Carolina played for the final shot and Greenwood got the ball to Gray. The junior forward then took a 15-footer that bounced around the basket before finally falling in with 5.5 seconds left.

Asheville raced down to take the final shot but Dickey's last-second attempt was blocked by Greenwood as the buzzer sounded to give the Chanticleers their first win at Justice Center in three years.

Both teams struggled to score in the first half. The Bulldogs finally made a surge, led by Dickey's nine points, to help give Asheville a 25-22 halftime lead.

The Bulldogs led despite shooting just 32 percent (7-of-22) from the field. However, the Chanticleers were much worse. CCU shot 24 percent (8-of-33) from the field and went just 1-of-7 from beyond the arc.  Primm had 10 points in the opening half.

Coastal Carolina improved its shooting in the second half as it shot 52 percent (14-of-27) from the field. The Chanticleers shot 37 percent for the game (22-of-60). Asheville shot 36 percent (20-of-56) from the field.

UNC Asheville hosts Charleston Southern Saturday afternoon at Justice Center starting at 4:30 p.m.  Coastal Carolina travels to Gardner-Webb Saturday night at 7 p.m.
