HIGH POINT, N.C. - Eugene Harris scored 15 points as High Point held off a UNC Asheville comeback as the Panthers slipped past the Bulldogs, 66-62 Monday night at the Millis Center.

The Bulldogs missed three free throws that would have tied the game or given Asheville the lead with 1:15 left.

High Point improved its record to 7-6 overall and 3-1 in league play. The Panthers remained unbeaten at home this year at 6-0.

The Bulldogs were led by John Williams and J.P. Primm with 14 points each. Freshman center D.J. Cunningham enjoyed a great game with 13 points and 12 rebounds. He had four steals.

Asheville (3-10, 1-2 BSC) trailed 56-46 with 10 minutes left but stormed back to tie the game at 60-60 with 2:24 left on a lay-up from Williams.

But Nick Barbour sank a three-pointer on the Panthers' next possession to give the home team a 63-60 lead. Williams tapped in a miss to cut the lead to 63-62. He was fouled on the play and had a chance to tie with a free throw.

Williams missed by freshman Jaron Lane came down with the rebound and was fouled. Lane missed both free throws and the Panthers were able to keep their slim lead at 63-62.

Two free throws from Tehran Cox put High Point up 65-62 at the 22-second mark. The Bulldogs had two chances to tie but three-point attempts by Matt Dickey and Primm spun out.

Barbour sealed the win with a free throw at the 5-second mark.

"We did a great job battling back but just couldn't finish the comeback," stated Asheville coach Eddie Biedenbach. "We were one play away from winning the game. Our guys just have to keep working hard, and we'll be a good team before the season is over."

Asheville really hurt itself at the free throw line as the Bulldogs went 4-of-12 from the charity stripe for 33 percent.

Asheville dominated the inside game as it out-scored the Panthers 48-24 in the paint. The Bulldogs forced 24 High Point turnovers which led to 28 Asheville points.

Barbour finished with 14 points for High Point, while Cruz Daniels had a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. He also blocked six shots.

The Bulldogs begin a two-game homestand against league-leader Coastal Carolina at Justice Center Thursday night at 7 p.m.
