Winthrop Holds Off UNC Asheville 44-38

01.30.2010 | Women's Basketball

ROCK HILL, SC- Shanice Cole scored 14 points to lead Winthrop to a 44-38 victory over UNC Asheville, Saturday afternoon at the Winthrop Coliseum.

The win ends a six-game losing streak for the Lady Eagles as they improve to 7-13 overall and 2-5 in the Big South. UNC Asheville falls to 6-15 overall and 1-7 in the league.

The Lady Eagles struggled from the floor in the first half, but were much better in the second half shooting 53 percent from the floor, but the game was still tight with 3:55 to go after Kendall Shepard's three cut the lead to 35-33. From that point on Winthrop used tough defense and outscored the Bulldogs 9-5.

Asheville was led by junior forward Lindsey Montgomery's ninth double-double of the year as she scored 11 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. Lindsey Thompson was in double figures for the second straight game with 11 points.

Winthrop jumped out to an 8-2 lead behind two baskets inside by TaQouia Hammick. Shanice Cole scored the first basket on an eight foot jumper in the lane and the run ended with Jessica Fansler getting all the way to the basket for a lay-in.

Neither team shot well in the first half as Winthrop hit 2-of-3 to start the game, but then only hit three of its next 17 shots and finished shooting 28 percent (7-for-25) for a 15-14 lead at the break. UNC Asheville started the game 2-for-21 that was ended by a Lindsey Thompson trey. Despite the struggles shooting from the field, Winthrop could not take advantage and only led 11-10 after the Thompson trey with 6:07 remaining. Lindsey Montgomery hit the first field goal for the Bulldogs at the 11:51 mark of the first half. Asheville was only 4-for-27 in the first half (15 percent) and only managed three points off nine offensive rebounds.

UNC Asheville will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 6 when it travels to N. Charleston, SC to take on Charleston Southern at 5 p.m.
