RADFORD, VA. - Defending Big South Conference Radford got 31 points from Art Parakhouski as the Highlanders held off UNC Asheville 82-74 in Big South Conference action at the Dedmon Center Saturday afternoon.

Parakhouski went 12-for-13 from the field and 7-for-8 from the free throw line to help RU (7-5, 3-0 BSC) win its second straight game.

The Bulldogs (3-9, 1-1 BSC) had great balanced scoring with five players in double figures. Matt Dickey came off the bench with 15 points. Freshman center D.J. Cunningham added 12 points and six rebounds. J.P. Primm had 11 points and seven rebounds. Sean Smith finished with 11 points, while John Williams chipped in 10 points.

"We did a great job battling back, and we were able to make the game a full-court game in the second half," stated Asheville coach Eddie Biedenbach. "But we made some key mistakes down the stretch that we shouldn't be making at this time of the year that really cost us."

The Bulldogs trailed by 16 in the first half and by 12 early in the second half before making a great run in the second half to briefly take the lead. Two free throws from Cunningham at the 7:43 mark gave Asheville at 56-55.

But the Highlanders quickly went on a 12-2 run with Parakhouski scoring eight points to put Radford in front for good at 67-58.

The Bulldogs got as close as six on a Dickey lay-up at the 16-second mark at 80-74 but could get no closer.

Asheville struggled with its free throw shooting as it went 17-of-28 for 61 percent.

"We missed some key free throws throughout the game," explained Biedenbach. "We had the right guys at the line and they just missed them. If we could have made a few more, we really could have made this a lot closer and had a shot at the end.

"Radford has a huge front-line, and it's tough to match up with them," added Biedenbach. "I thought we did a pretty good job for the most part and was very pleased that we out-rebounded them (37-33). We've just got to make better decisions when the game is on the line."

The Bulldogs fell behind badly early. Radford used its strong inside game to sprint to a quick 24-8 lead after eight minutes of play.

Asheville went on a 9-0 run, getting points from four different players to get back in the game at 24-17. The Highlanders settled for a 35-27 halftime lead.

Radford shot 59 percent (31-of-52) from the field for the game, while the Bulldogs shot 43 percent (27-of-62). Asheville had 13 second-chance points compared to just one for the Highlanders.

The Bulldogs play next at High Point Monday night at 7 p.m.
