Kulesz Wins Mile for Bulldogs at Appalchian Open

BOONE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville men's and women's indoor track and field teams returned to action at the Appalachian Open on Friday.
Highlighting the meet for the women's team was freshman Melanie Kulesz. Kulesz finished took first in the mile with a time of 5:18.05. Emma Bussard took seventh at a time of 5:42.59.
On the men's side, freshman newcomer Raymond Urrutia led the way for the Bulldog men. Urrutia, who just joined the Bulldog program this semester, finished fourth in the 200 meters with a time of 23.09 in his season debut.
Other top performers on the men's side included Eliud Chirchir finishing eighth in the mile with a time of 4:37.34. Derek Larsen came in ninth in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.12. His time is the second best in school history in that event. David Pickett and Jordan Yarbrough finished 10th and 11th in the 55-meters with times of 6.66 and 6.71. Those two times have them fourth and fifth all-time on the Asheville career list in the 55-meters.
Carlos Lopez and Kent Rankin came in ninth and 11th respectively in the 3000-meter run with times of 9:25.10 and 9:37. Nick Mozzone took 10th in the high jump at 1.79 meters.
On the women's side, Rebekah Pineda finished eighth in the weight throw with a mark of 11.07m. Eureka Jones came in ninth in the 55-meters with a time of 7.60. Clair Powell took ninth in the 3000-meter run with a time of 11:37.39. The women's 1600-meter relay team consisted of Sarah Gentry, Eureka Jones, Whitney Stafford and Alyska Kalmeijer. They came in sixth with a time of 4:19.70.
"This meet gave us a good idea what we need to work on in practice this week," stated Jesse Norman "We need to work towards being more competitive as a team for future events"
The Bulldogs return to competition next weekend in Johnson City, TN at the Niswonger Invitational on January 22-23.
