Women's Soccer Hosts Unbeaten Furman on Wednesday

The Bulldogs opened the season with three straight road matches and went 2-1 in those matches. Asheville fell to ASU on Aug. 30, 1-0 but rebounded to beat both Wofford (9-3) and East Tennessee State (9-5) by a score of 1-0. The Bulldogs got a goal from senior McKenna Stockhausen in the Wofford win, and freshman Chole McCleary-Small tallied the game-winner at ETSU.
Asheville's defense has been superb in the first three matches. The Bulldogs gave up a goal in the ASU loss in the 14th minute but has not been scored upon since that goal. Michele Cornish's club has not allowed a goal in 225 minutes of play. The goalkeeping has been split each match between freshman Megan Dent and senior Veronica Lazar. Each has played one half of each match this year.
"We've played pretty well the first three matches of the season," commented Cornish. "I really like the way we've battled and competed in each match. We still need to find a way to score more goals because we're not going to be able to win every match 1-0."
The Bulldogs get a big test on Wednesday against a Furman squad that is unbeaten on the year at 4-0. The Paladins won the Jacksonville Invitational this weekend with two victories.
"Furman has a good team and an excellent program," admitted Cornish. "We're going to have to be ready to play from the start and play for 90 minutes against Furman. They're well-coached and make nothing easy for you."
NOTES - The Bulldogs have played in five straight one-goal matches dating back to last season...Freshman goalkeeper Megan Dent has not given up a goal in 135 minutes of work this year...Asheville's last win against Furman came in the 1995 season when the Bulldogs won 5-0 and in that match, Kristi Cummings scored the second fastest goal in NCAA history when she scored five seconds into the match.
