09.13.2009 | Women's Soccer
The Bulldogs (3-2-0) trailed 1-0 and were being badly outplayed by the Golden Eagles before striking twice in the final 19 minutes to earn the victory.
Freshman forward Chloe McCleary-Small helped engineer the comeback with an assist and the winning goal.
Trailing 1-0, Asheville took advantage of a turnover to get the tying goal. McCleary-Small stole a Tech clearing pass and sent a perfect pass to Lauren Turnburke. Turnburke came in on a breakaway and hit a shot from seven yards out to knot the match at 1-1 at the 71:06 mark.
The shot by Turnburke was Asheville's first in more than 20 minutes as the Golden Eagles had picked up eight straight shots before Turnburke's goal.
The goal gave the Bulldogs new life and 11 minutes later defender Mary Kate Tucker sent a perfect pass to McCleary-Small who scored on a breakaway at 83:26 to give Asheville the lead for good at 2-1.
The home team was able to limit the visitors to just one shot the rest of the match to earn the victory.
TTU (1-5-1) out-shot the Bulldogs 16-14 and had a 9-2 edge in corner kicks.
The Golden scored first when Kerri Reid passed to Andrea Meloff who scored from five yards out at the 19:04 mark to give Tech a 1-0 lead.
Asheville goalkeeper Veronica Lazar had a stellar day in goal with seven saves. The Bulldogs play next in the Western Carolina Invitational on Friday night against Elon at 5 p.m.
