WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.-UNC Asheville saw its season-long six match win streak come to an end with a 3-1 (25-23, 18-25, 25-23, 25-22) to East Carolina on Friday night at the WSSU Invite.

The Bulldogs (7-3) were playing their second-straight match without their top attacker Kelsey Benorden. Lauren Ficker picked up the offense with 13 kills and just one error hitting .480 on the match. Cindi Miller had 12 kills and Jenna Dover added 11 kills.

East Carolina (4-4) was led by Stephanie Turner who recorded her third double-double of the year with a match high 13 kills and 15 digs.

"I thought our defense really played well today," said Asheville head coach Julie Torbett. "I can't ask anymore out of our team. They are fighters. We are really banged up right now with Kelsey (Benorden) out. Jenna (Dover) and Cindi (Miller) are both playing hurt. We may have had another injury but they just keep going out there and playing hard. We passed well today, we hit well, we just didn't get the points at the critical times. We actually out-scored ECU tonight they just closed out the sets so you have to give them credit."

Defensively, Raquel Miotto had 13 digs to lead the Bulldogs. She recorded 20 digs on the day placing her 44 digs shy on the all-time Big South and UNC Asheville record.

Asheville held a slight lead in hitting out-hitting ECU .289 to .248 but the Pirates held the advantage in blocking 9-5.

The Bulldogs defeated Savannah State 3-0 earlier in the day and will conclude the tournament on Saturday with matches against Wofford and host Winston-Salem State.
