Women's Soccer Hosts Tennessee Tech on Sunday
09.11.2009 | Women's Soccer
The Bulldogs (2-2-0) hope to get back on the winning track on Sunday after a tough 2-1 loss to Southern Conference juggernaut Furman Wednesday afternoon at home. The Paladins scored two goals in the first five minutes of the match and appeared to be on their way to a rout. However, Asheville settled down and got a goal from freshman Chole McCleary-Small to cut the lead to 2-1. The teams played pretty even after that as the Bulldogs could not get the equalizer.
"We bounced back after a shaky start against a good team," stated Asheville coach Michele Cornish. "I like the way we battled and competed. However, we're going to have to score more than one goal to win matches. We need our offense to play a little better."
Asheville faces a Tennessee Tech squad that is 1-4-0 on the season pending a match at Belmont on Friday. The Golden Eagles have played a tough schedule in the early going and their lone win was an impressive 7-0 blanking of Alabama State.
"We always have tough matches with Tennessee Tech," commented Cornish. "I expect it will be another competitive match on Sunday. We need to get back on the winning track."
NOTES - UNC Asheville has not allowed a goal in the second half of any of its four matches this season...the Bulldogs have played six straight one-goal matches dating back to last year...Senior goalkeeper Veronica Lazar has allowed just one goal this year and that came in the first match of the year against ASU...she has not allowed a goal in more than 135 minutes of action...the Bulldogs defeated Tennessee Tech last season on the road 2-1 on a late goal from Katy Beeler.
